Acreage Fence Calculator

Quick answer: A square acre is 43,560 square feet, so its perimeter is about 835 ft; one square acre needs roughly 835 ft of fence, and five square acres about 1,867 ft. Long, narrow fields need more. Enter acres and the field's length-to-width ratio to get perimeter, post count, wire footage and rolls.

Estimates for planning only — not legal, survey or engineering advice. Prices are the ones you enter. Confirm permits, property lines and post depth locally and call before you dig.

How it works

Area = acres × 43,560 sq ft. For a rectangle with length ÷ width = r, width = √(area ÷ r) and perimeter = 2 × (width + r × width). Posts = perimeter ÷ spacing + 1. Wire footage = perimeter × strands; rolls = footage ÷ roll length from your product label. Irregular fields: walk or map the line and use the total in the fence calculator.

Worked example

Figures below are illustrative examples (2026-10-29), not quotes or guarantees.

Assumptions: 5 acres, square, 12 ft spacing, 1 run of woven wire, 330 ft rolls. Perimeter about 1,867 ft (569 m), 157 posts, 6 rolls. The same 5 acres at a 3:1 ratio needs about 2,156 ft. Half an acre square is about 590 ft.

FAQ

Does this include gates?
